Stirrer PS380-380mm
Resin and topcoat should always be pre-mixed in the tin before adding catalyst, then stirred by hand for approximately 1–2 minutes after adding hardener to ensure the catalyst is fully dispersed. Mechanical mixing should be avoided as it can aerate the product and shear pigments, causing colour streaking in topcoat.
RODO Plastic Paint Stirrer PS380 – 380 mm Mixing Paddle
The RODO PS380 plastic stirrer is designed for effective hand mixing of coatings, resins and topcoats. At 380 mm long, it provides excellent reach when mixing materials in buckets or tins, making it ideal for preparing products used in GRP fibreglass roofing systems.
The stirrer features a perforated paddle design which allows resin to flow through the mixing blade while stirring. This improves blending efficiency and helps achieve a consistent, homogenous mix of resin, topcoat and catalyst.
Correct Mixing Procedure for GRP Resin & Topcoat
1. Pre-mix the product (before adding catalyst)
Before adding catalyst, resin or topcoat should always be stirred thoroughly in the tin. During storage, heavier components and pigments can settle while styrene and other elements separate slightly. Pre-mixing ensures the material is returned to a uniform consistency before catalysing.
2. Add catalyst (MEKP hardener)
Once the product is evenly mixed, add the required MEKP catalyst (typically around 1–2 %) depending on temperature and manufacturer guidance.
3. Stir thoroughly by hand
After adding catalyst, the material should be stirred slowly but thoroughly for around 1–2 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the mixing container to ensure the hardener is fully dispersed throughout the resin.
Insufficient mixing can leave areas of uncatalysed resin which may fail to cure properly.
Why Hand Mixing Is Recommended
When mixing GRP roofing products, hand stirring with a plastic stirrer is preferable to mechanical mixing.
Using drill-mounted mixers can:
-
Aerate the resin or topcoat, introducing air bubbles
-
Shear pigment particles, causing colour streaking in topcoat
-
Create excessive turbulence which can affect the final finish
Hand mixing gives greater control and helps ensure a smooth, bubble-free mix ready for application.
